Zoom Player 6.00 Description

In a market that's saturated with media players, Zoom Player attempts to tread a middle ground between those that are super flashy like Windows Media Player and those that are bare bones basic like VLCPlayer - at the same time.

The predictable result is that it looks better than most basic players although advanced mode offers a lot of unessential options that you probably won't need. The developers meanwhile claim they're trying to create the ultimate player in terms of ease of control and reproduction of high quality DVDs. Installation is a little bit slow though because you have to wait for it to update itself with all the various codecs needed to play most major media although at least it transparently shows you which codecs are installed and which are not.

Zoom Player comes installed with a graphic equalizer, playlist editor and everything else that you'd expect in a basic player. However, by going to the preferences and selecting "Switch to Advanced Mode" it turns into a far more complex affair with added options such as ability to load XML media files, load external media tracks and even configure a port so that it can be controlled from another computer.

Playback is smooth, files are loaded quickly and the playlist supports ID3 tags. Surprisingly though, it does not support subtitles which seems a big oversight.

Zoom Player is two players in one - a basic player that serves you well and an advanced player that offers a lot of options that you'll probably never need.
