For serious VLC Player fans, the ability to take your preferences with you wherever go is one thing that hasn't been possible. However, that's all changed with Portable VLC, which is a binary distribution of VLC Player packaged as a portable application so you can take your preferences with you.

This means you can run it on a portable device such as a USB thumb drive, iPod, external hard drive, memory card - in fact just about anything as long as it has 80 MB of free space on it. To use it, simply drag the Portable VLC OS X folder to your portable device, click on Portable VLC and that's it. You'll be shortly prompted to 'Copy preferences', which you just have to confirm, thus enabling you to save your bookmarks, history and preferences for use anywhere.

It may be very basic compared to its big brother but Portable VLC is an excellent free innovation for anyone who wants VLC Player plus its preferences on the move.
